Zach Hartley was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1982. Although he was interested in music at a young age, Zach did not begin playing an instrument until he was ten years old. He was lured into band due to the middle school band director making an incredible and very loud noise with a large roundish looking instrument during a “this is band” assembly. At that moment Zach decided that the “French Horn” was going to be his weapon of choice. During his high school career, Zach attained great musical success on the Horn in F attending a number of honor bands and festivals, including the Colorado All state band, and Top of the Nation Honor band. During this time Zach received private instruction from Professor Jack Herrick (University of Northern Colorado, retired).
After graduating from Loveland High School in Loveland, Colorado in 2001, he enrolled at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado as a music education major. While attending Adams State College, Zach studied Horn under Dr. Peter Morris, Dr. David Wilken, and Professor Douglas Camp. Although Zach had great success in Horn performance he found himself gravitating towards conducting after he had the opportunity to conduct Paul Hindemith’s “March from Symphonic Metamorphosis”. After Zach’s interest peaked, he decided to pursue his new found love and begin taking conducting lessons (along with horn lessons) for the remainder of his time at Adams State College. Zach had the privilege of studying conducting with Dr. Peter Morris (Villanova College, Brisbane, Australia), Dr. Jeffrey Steiner (Eastern Illinois University), and Professor Douglas Camp (Adams State College). In May of 2006, Zach graduated with a degree in Music Education from Adams State College, and is currently pursuing a Masters of Music in Wind Conducting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Additionally Zach would like to give his undying gratitude to his loving wife Autumn who has supported him and all of his “brilliant” ideas.
